Three Ways to Throw

Our goal is to make throwing axes extremely accessible. Here are three ways you can throw with VanIsle Axe!

You can either, book a lane (two targets) for a flat fee, come to one of our regular drop in nights, or join a league. That easy!

Book a Lane

Book a 90 minute throwing session in a single lane (two targets) any Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. We have two time slots available, 6:00-7:30pm and 7:30-9:00pm. When you book a lane, you can bring as many people as you like, however we recommend a maximum of 10 people per lane so everyone gets a good amount of throws!

Friday Night Drop In

Feel free to come by and sharpen your skills on your own, throw with a couple buddies, or take your date night to the next level. We’re open regularly on Friday nights from 6-9pm for drop in. However, it’s best to double check the calendar in case something comes up. $20 per person per hour, first come first served. We limit each lane to 10 people. (last call 8pm).

Join a League

We’re in the process of collecting names of people who would be interested in joining our VanIsle Axe Throwing League. We’re leaning towards 12 throwers, 8 weeks, every Wednesday night, $160 for the season. Drop us a line if you want in. We will get started once we have enough interest. Have ideas for us, we’re all ears!

Proudly Serving Nanaimo and all of Vancouver Island.

How much does it cost?

We have 3 ways to throw. You can either, book a lane (two targets) for a flat fee, come to one of our regular drop in nights, or join a league. Its really that easy. For bookings click here. To check out our drop in calendar, click here. Interested in a league? This link is for you.

Minimum or maximum group size?

When you book a lane, there is no minimum group size, if you feel like renting a lane all to yourself, go ahead, knock yourself out… well, not literally, but you get the point. And although we don’t limit the amount of people per lane (two targets), from our experience any more than 10 people throwing and things get crowded. If you have a group of 10 or more, consider renting 2 lanes, or extending your throwing session by another 90 mins.

If you don’t want to book a lane, you can always check the drop in calendar and come on by unannounced.

How long is a booking?

Right now, we allocate 90 minutes to each booking time. This includes registration, going through the rules, instruction on how to safely throw an axe, and several games facilitated by our staff.

Do you have leagues?

Setting up an axe throwing league is high on our priority list. If you would be interested in joining a league when we get rolling, please use the contact form on the website to reach out to us. Once we have enough people signed up, we will put something together! Most likely a league will be 8 weeks and cost roughly $160, but we are still working out the details. Find more information here.

Is axe throwing safe?

Yes, we conduct all our events in a supervised manner, your evening will be facilitated by trained professionals. Before you ever throw an axe, we go over the house rules and throwing instructions to ensure everyone has a fun and safe evening. VanIsle Axe ensures at least two staff will be working. We won’t tolerate any behaviour that puts anyone in danger.

What should I wear?

You should probably wear plaid. Because you will be throwing axes. Also toques are mandatory. Joking aside, wear whatever you find comfortable, just make sure that you have closed toed shoes. No sandals, heels, or other forms of open toed footwear will be allowed. Because you will be throwing axes.

How can I pay?

Right now we’re in the process of setting up an online booking platform, when we have this in place, we will accept credit cards online for bookings. However, until then, we will accept cash or credit when you come to the club, sorry no debit.

Do I have to sign a waiver?

As part of the registration process, we require that you read through and sign an accident waiver and release of liability form. We do everything possible to ensure your safety throughout your time with us, however you assume all the risks of participating in all activities associated with the event. If you would like a copy of the waiver ahead of time, please let us know, we can email one to you!

When are you open?

We’re available by appointment only, meaning we can’t accomodate people who just drop by and want to throw axes. Please don’t just stop in, advanced booking is mandatory. Don’t have enough people to book a lane, that’s cool, feel free to check our drop in calendar and come in then. We try to be open for drop in at least once a week on either a Friday or Saturday.

Want to make a reservation, we book lanes Thursday through Saturday between 6pm and 9pm. Our booking page explains everything you need to know!

Do you host large groups?

Yes, we do! We have 4 lanes with 2 targets per lane, 8 targets in total, that’s a lot of axes flying at one time. If you have a group of 20+ and would like to rent the entire facility for an event or private party, let’s talk. We can accomodate up to 75 people comfortably.

Can kids throw axes?

Because we love kids, and because safety is a huge concern for us, we’re very apprehensive about letting young kids throw axes. Here are some guidelines we’ve established, obviously some kids are more responsible and stronger than others, so if you have any questions at all, please contact us.

  • Anyone over 18 years old is not required to provide parental consent to throw. The standard waiver will be completed.
  • Anyone between 14 and 18 years old will be required to prove their age, have a parent or guardian sign a consent form, and throw under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Maximum of 2 kids under the direct supervision of an adult or guardian.
  • We do not allow children under 14 years old to participate in axe throwing.
  • VanIsle Axe will dis-allow participation of anyone we deem not able to throw an axe safely, regardless of age!

Our goal is to host special events where parents and their kids (14 and older) are encouraged to come and throw axes. If you would like to be  informed of upcoming events, please sign up for our newsletter.

Is previous experience required?

Absolutely not, We are set up to accommodate beginners to advanced axe throwers. Training and safety is included in every axe throwing session, we’ll be sure you’re set up for success.

Do you have a kitchen?

Yes we do! We are in the process of setting up the Axe Club Kitchen, and look forward to serving food shortly. We have drinks and snacks for sale, but we are also open to having groups bring in their own food. If catering is something you are interested in, please let us know. We can do a lot of things with the right notice!

Can I drink alcohol?

The simple answer is no. We’re not a licensed facility, we don’t serve alcohol, and we don’t allow people to bring in their own alcoholic beverages. In fact, we will refuse anyone we believe to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they come into the club. Safety of the group is our main concern.

What if I need to cancel?

We get it, life happens, if you need to cancel, please let us know as far in advance as you can. We can always try to reschedule for a later date. Please don’t just leave us hanging, if you have a booking, don’t no show… that would hurt our feelings.

Can I post to social media?

Absolutely, in fact, we appreciate it. Throwing axes is a lot of fun, and the best way to spread the word is through social sharing. Feel free to take and share pictures while you are with us. Tag #vanisleaxe if you feel so inclined. We’d also appreciate it if you’d follow us socially. Leaving a review on Facebook is the icing on the cake.
